PROJECT SUMMARY: Optimization of the U-Pb dating methodology by LA-ICP-MS: Applications to metabasic rocks of Rio das Velhas Supergroup basin.
LA-ICP-MS is considered the most efficient equipment to obtain instantaneously U-Pb data, with higher rates of material transference and a large number of analyses per day. Our study will use a modified LA-Q-ICP-MS method (with a low volume tear-drop shaped sample cell, a gas homogenizer and new analytical conditions) to improve sensitivity and signal stability, turning the counts per second higher on 204Pb, 206Pb, 207Pb, 208Pb, 232U and 238U masses, and to reduce laser ablation time. By testing different equipment configurations its possible to observe counts and errors, and then optimize the equipment in order to obtain more precise and accurate concordia ages, with larger counts and lower errors, acquiring then a more reliable data. This methodology will be then applied in heterogenic zircons of metabasic rocks from the Rio das Velhas Supergroup basin that round Bação, Bonfim and Belo Horizonte complexes, in order to acquire high quality and precise ages for studies about domes and keels in QF.
