Laser Ablation-ICP-MS U/Pb and isotopic tracing techniques have revolutionized the Earth Sciences over the past 20 years. They require a constant supply of well-characterized, isotopically-uniform standard materials. However, only a small number of such standards are available. Such a reference material should be isotopically/chemically homogeneous, with low contents of common lead, non-metamict, and available in large quantiies of coarse-grained, gem-quality crystals. Potentially suitable monazite is available in pegmatites from the Eastern Brazilian Pegmatite Belt (Araçuaí Orogen, Eastern Brazil). Currently, I am interested in the evaluation of such monazites for primary and/or secondary standard materials for LA-ICP-MS technique.
